A weekend at HQ

Updated: Jun 16, 2020

A busy mother was trying to get some dedicated time with her office work and was thinking of a way to keep her young daughter entertained. She tore (okay this is not for the faint-hearted book lovers… sorry) a world map off a children’s book and tore it further (ouch!) to bits. Gave it to her daughter and asked her to put the map back together.

To her utter surprise her daughter was back in 10 minutes with a perfect map. The mother had the look which was a classic mix of sheer shock and utter excited disbelief… did I produce this little wonder? “How did you do that so fast” she asked and the girl said “oh, there was a sketch of a human on the back the page which was easier to fix and the world fixed itself”.

Children often see what adults don’t and this belief of fixing the young human in the hope of fixing the world is what we believe in at Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting.

Look around you and the dismal lack of leadership this COVID19 has shed light on. Is this the world we deserve? We can whinge about it or do something about it. The 21 ladies who joined us at HQ on Saturday, 6th June were those who decided to do something about it. It was a joy to welcome such a large group of enthusiastic, talented and experienced women who were joining us as Leaders of Girls for the English-Speaking Division of Hong Kong Girl Guides Association.

Tying a reef knot behind their backs

There are 10 million girls and young women with the movement of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting across 150 countries, but without amazing women like you saying “yes” to taking on the role of Leader we cannot be in the business of churning out future leaders and agents of change. As someone who has been in the movement long enough, I can tell you that it’s a very rewarding job. Not everyone may see your cape or parrot-head handled umbrella and you thankfully wear your underpants in… but you are super woman! Welcome to the Bauhinia Division.
